Acne Q&A
What is acne?
Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that causes pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and deeper cysts. It most often appears on the face, chest, neck, back, and shoulders. Acne can affect adults but is most prevalent among teenagers. In fact, about 85% of individuals between the ages of 12 and 24 suffer from acne. Untreated, acne can result in permanent scarring.
What causes acne?
A variety of factors contributes to acne. Among the most prevalent are hormones, heredity, and stress. Acne occurs as the result of overactive oil glands that produce an excess of oil. When this oil combines with skin cells, it plugs pores, which, in turn, causes bacteria to multiply and cause skin breakouts.
Can acne be prevented?
Acne can be prevented to an extent. A person with extremely oily skin may be predisposed to acne development. For most people, however, preventing acne outbreaks may be as easy as keeping the skin clean and moisturized, eating healthily, and decreasing stress levels. Teenagers who are experiencing fluctuations in hormones may have a difficult time preventing acne but they can control its severity. Taking care of the skin and eating a nutritious diet are just two ways to reduce the severity of acne outbreaks.
